Cafayate, a must for wine lovers - A wine paradise in Argentina

“A Wine paradise” Cayafate is a charming tourist center located 178 kilometers from the city of Salta, 1.683 meters above sea level, inside the valleys “Valles Calchaquíes”. Its beautiful landscape it’s determined by the excellent microclimate and the beauty of its strange colors and figures, which makes it unique and worth to admire.

The particular wine made in this area is a fruity white one call “torrontés”. The annual mean temperature is about 14.8 °C, with a maximum of 28.5° C. and minimums of 9.4° C. July brings a dry temperate weather with a great luminosity. Its name is quichua or Quechua, from Peru. It is from these languages that old traditions denominated it as “water box”.

It was founded in 1840, but the final constitution came in 1863, when it turned into the capital of Cayate’s department, becoming the most important settlement in Calchaquíes valleys with a very powerful wine industry, a great variety of products, abundance of waters and the magnificence of its panoramic views. Expositions and craftworks are organized apart from traditional parties and festivals. During the day, Cafayate offers activities such as bike and horse rides, tours to the archeological Bravo Museum, and the “Serenata”, one of the most important folkloric events on February.

Through 5 Km of road, San Isidro arrives, with some ancient cave paintings. The Walks along the place towards the village and through the artisan’s path, the walks to Colorado River, bike rides or tours to some of the wineries are just some of the activities around the place. The unique wines “torrontes” can be tasted along the excursions organized from Cafayate; the tour to Yacochuya, a place of wineries that counts with an exuberant vegetated lake; the cascade, sure cave and the stone mill, horse rides to “Santa Teresita”, trekking and walks along the dunes. Just before arriving to Animaná, the road to San Antonio appears, a place of ancient cave paintings and finally “Tolombón”, ruins of a fortified population that dates from the pre Columbus period. There is an important winery where apart from the classic wines, some of the best champagne is made.

Dunes, small sand blocks composed by chalky mica (mineral), of all kinds tourists from around the world with curious figures created by the wind, especially when walking at moonlight.
